To achieve nice colours when using natural dyes there are a couple of essential things to remember. Firstly, always thoroughly wash the cotton you are about to dye. You need cloth free of any impurities and starch. Secondly, mordant the fabric well. Without a good mordant the dye won't fix to it. For this design we then used a carved block to print on a resist before we applied the dye.
